On Saturday, July 17, dozens of pilots will provide their planes and volunteer their time to carry 2,000 of Special Olympics athletes from around the country to Lincoln, Neb., for the Special Olympics 2010 USA National Games. Members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) are doing it to give back.
On July 17 and July 24, 2010, AOPA is asking members to volunteer their citations to take athletes to and from the Lincoln Municipal Airport. So far, Special Olympics Michigan has five planes reserved. But more are needed to help fly the Michigan delegation from Grand Rapids, Mich. to the National Games in Nebraska. The Michigan delegation consists of 61 athletes, 17 coaches, and 5 members of the Special Olympics Michigan staff.
With the help of AOPA, athletes are able to travel and make the journey to win the gold. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association is a big help and inspiration to Special Olympics and Special Olympics Michigan.
