Hundreds of spectators lined the windows of Detroit’s own Roostertail as brave souls wearing crazy costumes jumped into the frigid water of the Detroit River for the Special Olympics Michigan Polar Plunge. The Detroit site is the largest of 19 Polar Plunges around the state this year! More than 320 plungers collectively raised more than $120,000. That triples the amount raised at the Detroit Polar Plunge in 2009!
Plungers got quite creative with their costumes from flying monkeys to a male bride and groom. Educators from Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD), a special needs school in Clinton Township, had a strong showing. This 17 member group dressed up as characters from The Cat in the Hat. “It wasn’t a bad as I thought it would be. It was really quick but once you’re in you want to get out as soon as possible. I didn’t even wait for the ladder I just jumped out but it was so much fun,” said first time MISD plunger, Brenna Przeslawski.
