Dressed in a self-made mermaid costume with a tail that sticks out straight behind him, Nathan Jonaitis embodies the essence of true Polar Plunge spirit.
Jonaitis' interest in Polar Plunges began when he lived in Montana. He saw an advertisement there for a Polar Plunge and thought it was something he would like to do. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to participate.
His hopes of plunging were not dashed for long, however. Jonatis was able to take the plunge when he moved to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Since then, he has jumped in every Mt. Pleasant Polar Plunge since the event began four years ago. Over the years Jonatis has taken home the trophy for best costume and raising the most money. This year he raised an impressive $5,011 and was once again named the top fundraiser in Mt. Pleasant.
Jonaitis plunges because he believes in the mission of Special Olympics Michigan to provide athletic training and competition, to enrich the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
"I've always been a real proponent of Special Olympics because I've always been an athlete. I have family members who participate and I just really enjoy the opportunities it gives people. I just think sports are one of the most fun things you can do," said Jonaitis.
Before taking the plunge, Jonaitis was hesitant about entering the cold water, but excited to plunge in his costume that was inspired by his cousin's Halloween costume.
"I'm a little sick this year, so I'm not really looking forward to the cold but the plunge is quick and I think my costume is going to be a good one," said Jonaitis.
After exiting the water, Jonatis was pleased with his plunge but found the tail of his costume a little problematic.
"It was good. It was a good day. The tail was a little hard getting out of the water but I'm awake now," said Jonaitis.
