You could see the excitement in their eyes as participants anxiously waited for takeoff. Athletes, coaches, family and friends gathered together to compete in the Rowing Clinic Challenge. This was just one of many special events offered throughout the 2010 State Winter Games.
Six people at a time compete in a 500M simulated rowing race. The lights dimmed as the competitors took their marks; then they were off! Spectators filled the room at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa cheering and clapping to motivate participants to make it to the end. The Concept2-Model D Indoor Rowers made for a life-like representation of what actual rowing is like.
Although a close race, Mason Hengartner of Area 2, managed to pull in the lead and come in first place. “It was hard work but since I’m strong, fast and healthy I think it helped me and that’s really important.” Mason has been an active athlete in Winter Games for about eight years competing in Snowshoeing. He completed the Rowing Clinic Challenge in just over two minutes.
Special events, such as this one, help get everyone ready for competition. Spirits were high and smiles filled faces from ear to ear. Athletes were ready to compete and have fun. Special Olympics Michigan thanks everyone who has made these events possible.
