The Wertz Warriors Ride: A Tribute to Mark Fidrych

By: Mallorie Stiger

On January 31 the Wertz Warriors will set out on their 900- mile, week long endurance ride from Mt. Clemens to Petoskey. This year's ride is a tribute ride to Mark "The Bird" Fidrych.  In 2009, the Wertz Warriors and Special Olympics Michigan lost a great friend and supporter with Mark's sudden death. Mark, a former Detroit Tiger, rode with the Wertz Warriors for 17 years. He had a huge heart for athletes. A special tribute video will be played during the Opening Ceremonies at State Winter Games that will honor Mark's spirit, passion and love for athletes. He is truly missed and his legacy will live on through the Wertz Warriors and their dedication to Special Olympics Michigan.

Wertz Warriors member Mike Carden said, "I go on the ride each year, because there is nothing in this world like the feeling you get when you see the smiling faces of the athletes at the Opening Ceremonies. You truly realize why you come back each year."

Since their start in 1982, they have raised over $7,917,000 to help fund the State Winter Games, which will be held in Traverse City February 2-5. "When you see the athletes you feel incredibly satisfied knowing the difference you've made in the lives of others," said Wertz Warriors member Ken Mattei. The Wertz Warriors stop at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa for Opening Ceremonies on Wed. Feb. 3. The riders will give approximately 750 Special Olympics Michigan athletes rides on snowmobiles in just 90 minutes at the State Winter Games.

You can meet the Wertz Warriors in person or contribute to their cause at any of dozens of stops along their ride. For the 2010 ride itinerary click here.
